Statement for Seeing Red, Mostly Blue
rom my first creative acts, repetition and pattern have been dominant features, becoming a primary thread through my work. For the last six years, I have focused on discarded, mass-produced fabric such as skirts, shirts, and curtains as subject matter. In the case of these oil paintings and gouache works, I’m specifically searching for red, white, and blue fabric items.
As someone who has spent much of my life in the United States, but was born in England, I can’t help but notice that both the Union Jack and the American flag use these colors —as do many other flags. Although always interested in working with layers of associations, there is an absurdity to the idea that national identity can be attached to a color combination. Unlike “In Time and Repetition,” a body of work I’ve completed, this is an ongoing project.
